What is a LOOF cat name?

A LOOF cat name is simply the name of a cat registered in the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF), which is therefore purebred and has a pedigree, moreover did you know that some cat names are better suited to some purebred cats. Unlike those of alley cats and other classic cats without pedigree, the names of LOOF cats are not determined by chance, they are regulated if you want to register your cat.

How do LOOF cat names work?

The names of LOOF cats follow very precise rules: the first letter of the cat's first name depends on its year of birth.

For example, if your purebred cat registered with LOOF was for example born in 2018, you must give it a name starting with "O", and then by "P" or the "Q" if it was born in 2019, to 2020 the first letter of the name will be "R".

In addition to the first name when adopting a kitten in a cattery, the breeder will give it a last name depending on its origin and its ancestry. The breeder will also register the kitten in the LOOF (Official Book of Feline Origins), so it will have an affix, that is to say a "family name". This last name is simply the name of the cattery in which you had your kitten.

How are the letters of the year chosen for the names of cats?

For all purebred cats with a pedigree, the first letter of the name must obligatorily begin with a letter which depends on the year of birth of the small feline. This rule was introduced by the Société Centrale Canine in 1926, to put order in the LOOF and modify in 2014.
