The Siamese

With his black mask, his sapphire eyes and his light robe, the Siamese, sacred cat of the kings of Siam, is fascinating by his slender physique and his strong character. One ofcat breeds the oldest and most well-knownin the world, they are intelligent, affectionate, sociable, protective and loyal to their owner and family.

However, it is a very clingy or even capricious cat, which to be fulfilled, needs above all the care and affection of a devoted and patient master, as well as a minimum of accessories adapted to meet his need for exercise and his love for games. Below, everything you need to know about this special cat from Thailand.

Who is the ideal cat for?

Medium in size, coated with short silky hair, the Siamese is an intelligent cat who easily adapts to an indoor living environment while having access to the outdoors. It is also a cat with an affectionate and perfectly sociable temperament who cohabits with children and supports other domestic animals. So, whether you live in an apartment, in a house or in the countryside, with or without a family, the Siamese will feel at ease.

However, he is a capricious, very possessive, talkative cat who cannot stand loneliness. He therefore needs a loving, devoted, available and patient teacher to take constant care of him. Therefore, we cannot recommend it to you if you are a busy person or who needs peace and quiet.

Origin and History of the Siamese

The Siamese is a very old breed of cat native to Southeast Asia, the first discovery dates back to the14th century Thailand. It is believed to be from the line of the sacred cats of the temples of Siam. Manuscripts and legends describe the life of this special feline in the royal palaces of Siam.

A couple of the breed made its arrival in Europe by Britain since the 19thcentury, reported Bangkok by the British consul Edward Blencowe Gould. The Siamese was first presented during the Crystal Palace Cat Show in 1885, before being exported to the United States.

The Siamese is recognized in 1889 and the first standards of the breed are defined from 1892. Its popularity really explodes in the 1950s. Later, the Siamese will be used for the creation and development of many other cat breeds such as the Himalayan, Balinese, Oriental or Havana…

Physical characteristics of the Siamese

The Siamese has a long triangular head with flat cheeks, as well as a long and straight muzzle. The dark mask in her face brings out the intense blue of her almond-shaped eyes facing her nose. Its triangle-shaped ears are also large and broad at the base.

The Siamese has an athletic physique with his fine bones and firm muscles, his slender body and his slender figure giving him an elegant appearance. Medium in size, it weighs between 2 and 6 kg. As for its members, it should be noted that it has thin and long legs but proportional to its body, as well as small oval feet. Its body ends in a long, slender tail in the shape of a whip.

Finally, the Siamese has a short, fine and silky coat. But her most striking visual feature remains her colourpoint dress. If the majority of colors are accepted (chocolate point, lilac point, blue point, tabby point,…) it is very interesting to note the darker coloring on the face, and at the extremities of the limbs.

Behavior of the Siamese

The Siamese is an intelligent cat and devoted to his master, endowed with a very sociable, tolerant and playful temperament. Which makes him an excellent companion because he knows how to live in family, loves children and cohabits with other animals. However, do not count on him to give a friendly reception to your strangers, because he develops quite curiously a fearful and defensive attitude towards them which he does not like very much.

Defect for some masters, main asset for others, the Siamese is a very endearing, even possessive cat who requires the constant attention of his human, whether for his cuddles and caresses or to play. Hating loneliness, he can easily sink into depression lacking affection or attention from his family.

Although gentle and affectionate, the Siamese is often capricious and very talkative, not hesitating to raise his voice to make you accede to his desires or express his dissatisfaction.

Health and care for the Siamese

The Siamese is a robust cat with relatively solid health. However, he has a natural tendency to urinary stones and to be overweight. Fortunately, it is a sporty cat who spends a lot of time. Other health problems related to this breed can be felt, in particular lung, liver or heart atrophy, retinal atrophy as well as oral pathologies.

In addition, he is not spared by the diseases common to all cats as well as possible accidents that can affect him at all stages of his life, the expectation of which is quite long (14 to 20 years). Hence the need to be preventive by being up to date on his vaccines and ensuring that he has a dietetic diet as well as good overall hygiene.

In order to ensure the best possible health care for your Siamese without having to worry about the cost, it is more than recommended that you take out Siamese cat insurance.

Does the Siamese need specific food?

It is important to remember that purebred cats do not absolutely need a specific food. Like all cats, your Siamese simply needs a healthy and balanced diet, and perfectly adapted to his exclusive carnivore diet.

You must therefore alternate pâtés and croquettes, provided that they are rich in a variety of natural meats or fish, without food supplements or any other chemical such as colorings and preservatives. The Siamese having a propensity for liver disease, heart and digestive disorders, ban cereals from his diet and control the intake of carbohydrates and lipids. Likewise, to limit kidney stones, be sure to control mineral intake.

The ideal is that its foods are sufficiently rich in protein and are caloric, but rather low in fats and minerals. However, if your Siamese is sterilized or not very active, you will need to be careful of the risk of overweight when rationing his meals.

What budget to have a Siamese?

Note that the purchase price of a Siamese cat strongly depends on certain criteria. In a non-exhaustive way, it will be influenced by the sex, the age, the quality of the pedigree of the parents, the quality of its coat, the reputation of its breeder,…

But as an estimate, note that the cost of adoption of a Siamese male or female kitten is between 600 and 2700 €. This will also require an average of 450 to 850 € in maintenance expenses over the year.

Accessories adapted to the Siamese

The Siamese needs a minimum of accessories (of quality, solid and adapted to his morphology) to be happy and fully developed. These are accessories focused on hygiene such as litter boxes. Likewise, for the maintenance of his coat it will be necessary to provide a grooming kit.

In addition, a kibble dispenser or food bowls will be useful for serving meals. A water fountain will be essential to ensure good hydration on a daily basis. You must also provide a cat flap for its mobility, as well as a cabin so that it has a cozy corner outside the house.

Finally, you will notice that the Siamese is a hyperactive and playful cat who particularly likes to climb. Therefore, you should also think about giving him entertaining and stimulating accessories, to allow him to express this innate character. These include trunks with scratching posts, a high perch or cat tree, circuits to develop agility and senses, and various other cat toys.

adopt a Siamese?

As with all purebred cats, the best place to adopt a Siamese is breeding. By getting closer to professional breeders, you have the assurance of adopting a feline that is in good health and that respects the recognized standards of the breed. Obviously, such a satisfaction guarantee will necessarily have a higher cost.

In addition to breeding, you can also adopt in catteries or cat shelters. Finally, adoption from a private individual is also a possible option, although it is less secure for you, because the risk of finding yourself involved in animal trafficking is high. This is why we advise you to deal preferably with a close person rather than a stranger.
